The CIES 2011 Awards Ceremony will take place on Sunday, May 1, 2011—immediately following the conference Welcome and Opening Plenary.  Congratulations to this year’s award recipients!



GAIL P. KELLY AWARD
The Gail P. Kelly Award honors an outstanding doctoral dissertation that addresses social justice and equity issues in an international context.

●  Kristy Kelly 
  Learning to mainstream gender in Vietnam: Where equity meets locality in development policy
●  Donna Tonini   [honorable mention]
  The wide divide between policies and impacts: Examining government influence over 
  parental educational choice in Tanzania
●  Paula Gains   [honorable mention]
  Learning about literacy: Teachers’ conceptualisations and enactments of early literacy pedagogy 
  in South African grade one classrooms

GEORGE BEREDAY AWARD
The George Bereday Award recognizes the most outstanding article published in the Comparative Education Review in the preceding calendar year; all published articles are reviewed for their importance in shaping the field, analytic merit, policy implications, concern for theoretical constructs, and implications for future research.

  Politics of externalization in reflexive times: Reinventing Japanese education reform discourses 
  through “Finnish success"  (Comparative Education Review, Vol. 54, No. 1)

JOYCE CAIN AWARD
The Joyce Cain Award recognizes an outstanding scholarly publication that explores themes related to people of African descent, in honor of the memory of Joyce Lynn Cain.

●  Sarah Dryden-Peterson
  Bridging home: Building relationships between immigrant and long-time resident youth

JACKIE KIRK AWARD
The Jackie Kirk Award honors a published book that reflects the varied areas of expertise represented in Jackie Kirk’s areas of commitment—primarily gender and education and/or education in conflict (fragile states, post-conflict, and peace education).

    Peace Ed in Conflict & Post-Conflict Societies: Comparative Perspectives

HONORARY FELLOWS AWARD
The Honorary Fellows Award was established by CIES in 1982 to honor senior members of the Society  who—through a period of life-long service and contribution to the field of comparative and international education, as evidenced by scholarship, teaching, and technical service—have advanced the field qualitatively and significantly.

INTERNATIONAL TRAVEL AWARD
The International Travel Award recognizes distinguished service in educational reform by international experts from developing countries; the award was established through an endowment from George Soros and the Open Society Institute to encourage distinguished researchers and practitioners from developing countries to participate in CIES conferences.

NEW SCHOLARS TRAVEL GRANT
The New Scholars Travel Grant honors participants of the New Scholars Workshop and offers $200 for travel support to attend the CIES Annual Meeting.

UREAG TRAVEL GRANT
The UREAG Travel Grant recognizes the efforts of students from under-represented racial, ethnic, and ability groups who need support for travel to the CIES conference to present the results of scholarly research.
